Plant for autumn colour
Plant for autumn colour to keep your garden looking gorgeous well into the first frosts. It's a great time of year to get new shrubs and trees into the ground and there's a fantastic range in our garden centre, all brilliantly colourful at this time of year. Here are a few of our favourites:
Toffee apple tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) adds scent to the autumn display, releasing a sweet perfume like toffee apples as it drops its yellow, red and orange leaves in autumn.
Japanese maple (Acer palmatum, A. dissectum) is hard to beat for its autumn display, and small enough for containers. 'Osakazuki' turns vivid scarlet in autumn.
Chinese dogwood (Cornus kousa var. chinensis) brings strawberry-like fruits to the party: its autumn colouring is a deep, vivid red.
Juneberry (Amelanchier lamarckii) is a small tree that has it all: spring blossoms are followed by shiny black edible berries and red, orange and yellow leaves.
Rosa moyesii is a vigorous, easy-to-care-for rose with bright red flowers, but its crowning glory is the bottle-shaped orange hips smothering the bush in autumn.
Beauty berry (Callicarpa bondinieri var. giraldii 'Profusion') has perhaps the most extraordinary autumn berry display, covered in huge clusters of tiny brilliant violet-purple jewel-like fruits.
